Winterscape
This painting envisions an era when steam locomotives traversed landscapes of farms, rolling hills and plains to connect communities, providing a form of transportation that was more relaxed, more scenic, and more social than we experience today.
The painting was based on visual elements gleaned from more than 500 photographs taken on a cold January day in 2004. The previous evening, I had ventured to the northeast Ohio town of Coshocton during a heavy snow to attend the first Winter Photo Special of the Ohio Central Railroad. Over the course of a day that started before sunrise, I rode and photographed the restored trains and snow-covered landscapes, imagining how previous generations of travelers felt as they crossed the rural winterscape.
