Reflections

Reflections

Like the portrait of my grandparents, this painting had its origins during my spring break from Berea College in March 1983.

The painting was derived from several photographs I took of my grandfather. My grandfather lived 99 years. He was born in 1899 and grew up in rural Virginia; he had a third grade education and was largely self-taught; he raised a family during the Great Depression and his extended family suffered numerous tragedies. Nevertheless, I remember him as a man of great dignity, who always had time and love for his grandchildren. He would often spend hours sitting in his chair, looking out the large picture window of the house he built -- seen reflected in his eyeglasses -- lost in thought. I hope this portrait captures a bit of his reflections on life.
