PewsIn June 2001, I visited Sweden with my wife and parents. During our tour of the country, we visited many historic churches, all of which had stood for many centuries. This painting was developed from a series of photographs I took of Lund Cathedral, for which construction began around 1100 AD. The wood of the pews reflected both the light from overhead windows and the many years of use by parishioners. The warm glow of the wood, worn with age but still evoking a sense of welcome and comfort, serve as a visual metaphor for churches everywhere.
